Joyce Irene (Chung) Bodenhoefer passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, December 11, 2014 in Temecula, California, due to complications of treatment for cancer.  She was 75 years old.

Joyce was born August 2, 1939 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Dr. John K.C. and Caroline Chung.  Dr. Chung was drafted into the Army and sent to China, after which Joyce, her mother, and her sister joined extended family in Santa Ana.  Upon his return, Dr. Chung completed a residency at Orange County Hospital and established his Family Medicine practice in Costa Mesa.  Joyce attended Lindbergh and Main Elementary Schools, and graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 1956.

After briefly attending Orange Coast College, Joyce married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Ray Bodenhoefer, on March 8, 1957.  The couple raised their children, Stacey and Kenneth II, in Costa Mesa. Like their parents, both children graduated from Newport Harbor High School.

Joyce worked at her father’s medical practice for many years, after which she transitioned into escrow and lending.  In 1995, Joyce’s career with World Savings & Loan drew her and Ken to San Antonio, Texas, where she continued her position as a loan document preparation supervisor.

In 1998, the couple moved back to California, where they settled in Temecula, and Joyce lived out the rest of her days in close proximity to her family.

Fondly referred to as “Sarge,” Joyce was consistently an in-charge kind of gal.  An accomplished crafter and proud homemaker, she spent hours knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, and even dabbled in stained glass; all of her grandchildren have beautiful needlepointed or cross-stitched Christmas stockings.  An excellent cook, she regularly tried out new recipes and particularly enjoyed watching cooking shows.  Her grandchildren adored their “Doppy” - even their friends knew and loved “The Dopster.”

Joyce and Ken had tremendous wanderlust, often spending weeks at a time on the road in their RV. They had visited all of the lower 48 states in their coach, and regularly enjoyed adventures with their camping club.  Friends and family meant everything to Joyce: she and Ken maintained many high school friendships, and never passed up the opportunity to attend a wedding, graduation, or anniversary party, no matter where it might take them.  Joyce was well known among the Temecula Valley Elks, of which her husband is a member.  She also volunteered at Temecula Valley Hospital and Temecula Valley Library, and was past treasurer of the Temecula Valley Woman's Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), PO Box 97167, Washington, DC 20090 or Temecula Valley Elks #2801, 28061 Diaz Road, Temecula, CA 92590 or to the charity of your choice.
